Nice open BLM space, some large rocks to look out for, some ant hills. We saw a centipede and some lizards (I’m glad we were camped off the ground). Very level, open parking lot for camping. The center is supposed to be available for parking, but it has gotten overgrown with some vegetation, so people are mostly parking on the perimeter. This campground is pretty quiet even though it is 1/4 mile from Hwy 62, just south of Mile Marker 9. We had strong Verizon signal and were able to conduct Zoom meetings and FaceTime video calls.

Stayed three days. Over grown areas with vegetation that hides the larger rocks, and items that can flatten a tire.

Have someone walk ahead of your vehicle as you park. There were only 3 others there each night. It was very quite and we had no issues. Large dumpster on the site.

We were consistently getting 30 mpbs download speed and 17 mpbs upload on our AT&T hotspot. Verizon signal also strong, but I forgot to test the actual speeds. Great location — about 10 minutes to Carlsbad Caverns NP and 25 minutes to Guadalupe. Lots of space. A couple generators here and there, but overall a quiet and lovely spot to camp if visiting the NPs.

It’s a lovely place to park for free. During the day the road is highly traveled by big rig. At night the generator vs loud music ear begins. But hey it’s free. I’ll take free over $45-50 per nite stop overs. People do tend to park haphazardly so getting here early is a big plus.

On Sunday, a TT was leaving his spot in the center area and stopped because his trailer had a nail in a trailer tire. I gave him a hand, and he said that the day before he had one in a truck tire. He's not sure where he picked them up, but watch out for that!
Plenty of room each day as people left and others arrived. We would stay here again for sure. T Mobile internet usually good, but disappeared sometimes.

This was our 1st dry camp with the new set up, and was perfect for that purpose. Easy in/out, any size rig fits and there was plenty of room to spread out. Even arriving at 3pm on a Friday, there were only 5 others here, and we scored a spot on the rail with a view of the sunset. Saturday morning there were 12 rigs here including us, and most pulled out by 11am, leaving only us & 3 others till nightfall. Some road noise, but nothing unbearable. Did have some winds,, but again nothing unbearable. Walmart, Albertsons, Lowes, Tractor Supply all just a short drive up in Carlsbad. Diesel prices are consistent all over so we topped off at Marathon in White's City, rather than going back to town. All in all a good stop over. We stayed 4nts to do both parks & resupply. DH enjoyed it.... I may have made a believer out of him finally.
2/18/22: 652 is a mess. While a shorter distance than how our GPS wanted to go, there were 5 areas where it was 1 lane & we had to wait for it to be our directions turn... while shorter, it took just as long. Luckily it isn't very traveled or it could have taken a lot longer.

Parking along perimeter counter clockwise leaves you plenty of room and your patio side is open to nature (except for the rail fence). If headed south, be sure and get any necessities including fuel if needed at White's City as there is nothing all the way to El Paso.
