We needed one night on a Friday, called at 4:30 and the ranger was nice enough to get us booked over the phone. It was a peaceful night, saw plenty of wildlife and stars. Only giving four stars because the baths could use an update, but I’ve showered in worse! It was a really private beautiful campsite.

Camped 1/26/22 (Wed night). Elec and water site. With our TX State Parks pass, not charged $5 per person per day entrance fee. Our site was nice, large, private with brush around it. We had a slight view of the lake, and it wasn't as windy as the lake view sites. Grass was mown short; we had no issues with sand burrs/goat head stickers. Almost right away, javalinas walked through the brush behind our site. We also saw deer and turkeys walking through the campground, plus a variety of birds at the bird sanctuary. Park was fairly full and busy. Notes:
- Our pad was level and was asphalt not gravel. Road thru CG is paved.
- Our site was level and clean, a back-in site.
- Camp host on site, but we didn't see them.
- Bathrooms looked older and in need of some repair (chipped tile, stall door that didn't close). We didn't use the showers.
- Trash containers along the road are convenient.
- Noise: Not bad, but there was a good deal of traffic passing by, boat noise, people talking.
- Nice amount of trees, open space, brush, and sites are nicely spaced apart (most anyway).
- Had 1 bar cell service mostly, sometimes 2. A neighbor said she had 4 with AT&T.

The camper sites are very nice. Brush is so thick you can’t see the lake. They don’t give any discounts to seniors or military vets if they are from out of state, so you get charged extra. $10 extra per each additional person.

Decent sites. 132 was slightly off level and had a small drop off once off the pavement. The park is large, but it doesn’t have a lot to do. There aren’t many hiking trails. This park seems to be designed to boaters.

Great birding and other wildlife. We saw deer, rabbits, and a baby boar. We rode our bikes around and wished we had a kayak. Nice star gazing and amazing sunsets. Friendly campers. We would definitely come back.

As I drove into Choke Canyon, I wondered what in the world made me want to stop here. Granted, it's still winter in early February, so all the trees were gray and scrubby. Looking at the camp map, I thought the campsites were on the lake, but I didn't see any lake. But I went ahead and set up. The site was nice and wide, level and paved. It had a nice pavilion over a solid picnic table with a firepit/grill. Then I noticed I was parked next to a bird sanctuary. Wow. This little patch of land was filled with birds! Cardinals, green jays, sparrows, ladder backs, golden-fronted woodpecker, red-wing blackbirds, [grackles] and Audubon's orioles. So cool. The lake is a short and easy hike from the campground. There I found brown and white pelicans, egret, coots and heron. At night, the stars were so bright I could watch them from inside my camper. It was a great spot.

Trails, wildlife, a nicely maintained campground with mostly level sites. Birding and fishing are big here. Bathrooms are a little old, but they do the job. No complaints. Not a ton to do; but it’s a great place to just kick back and relax.
