Chippokes Plantation State Park Campground

Spot: B14 in a 38' Class A Motorhome.

Route to campground: Route 10 to Alliance Road was the best way to get to this out of the way park. There are some branches that were low, but still got through. Didn't like the other roads the GPS recommended.
Interior Roads: Paved and pretty wide (on the site specific side)
Campsites: On the site specific side, they are paved, level and spacious. The non-site specific sites are okay too, but they are not paved, and the good ones go fast. Plan ahead and reserve a site specific spot.
Facilities: Bathhouse was clean. The pool is still closed, and there are two small playgrounds a bit of a hike from the camp sites. Visitor center has a few things for sale.
Activities: Walking along the James River, Kayaking (bring your own), horse trails, and touring the plantation house. You can find Hampton Roads Winery about 15 minutes away and is worth the visit.
Reception: Barely Digital TV. No cell phone reception (T-Mobile).

Overall, we like this state park a lot because it is close for us and there are a few things to do when we just want to get away and do things together outside. Check out the Harvest Fest in October.

When entering the park turn off VA10 onto route 634. The RV GPS I use had me turn on a different road and it was passable but narrow. 634 is wider and a better road. I arrived after hours and went straight to my reserved site and set up. That evening my welcome package was dropped off by the camp host. Site B07 is a paved back in site that is level left to right and slopes down toward the road. Water and 20/30/50 amp electric available; dump station is provided on the way to the park exit. The campsite had a large pea gravel pad with picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. Mature trees provide plenty of shade (and pine needles). The bathhouse is clean and well maintained with separate individual shower rooms and a laundry room. Cell service at the campground is intermittent at best with no Wi-Fi. If you travel to the river, cell coverage (T-Mobile) is great
Check the website for events, programs, and tour dates and times. Most seem to happen Friday thru Monday.
Walking the park with the dogs and checking out the displays and fossil beach on the James River was great. When you are in this part of Virginia you have to go to the Virginia Diner and pick up some peanuts from a local business, both in Wakefield.

This is to report on the actual campground. We have camped here several times. Being a Virginia resident we paid $40/night for B loop. It is the newer paved loop and all sites have a paved pad. The pool will not be open this summer. We are on site 01. It is very shaded. Of all the sites in B loop it has a greater incline than the others. In our short Rpod it didn’t matter much but it will on longer RVs. The bathrooms are on the opposite end of the loop from us. We just left Kiptopeke SP near Cape Charles so I am comparing the 2. We were on B5 at Kiptopeke. Those sites are grass. On B lane most sites were fairly level. On A the back side had quite a bit of incline. Many of the sites at Kiptopeke had sewer too. They kept the grass cut every day. Very clean bathrooms too. Here at Chippokes they need to work on that. Not as clean and the water pressure struggles to flush the toilets. The showers here at Chippokes are on the back side of the building and each on is a separate little room. There is also a laundry.
There are some very large pull through sites here at Chippokes. There are no pull thru sites at Kiptopeke. If you are tent camping there is a separate section at Kiptopeke and it is very nice! Shaded and large. I think there may be a few tent sites in Chippokes but I need to check. Loop A has smaller sites and not paved. We took the GPS route , not a good idea. Narrow winding road. Take the road from Surry Hwy 10 to the CG. Maybe it is suggested on the site. Get your groceries ahead of time. Nothing is nearby Chippokes. At Kiptopeke there is a grocery store nearby. We have camped here several times and enjoy it. Took the ferry yesterday to Jamestown. Always a lot to do.

The draw for us was the proximity to Jamestown and Williamsburg. The campground itself is also historic, although CV-19 kind of got in the way of that. There's a car ferry to the otherside of the James River which is kind of the only way to get to the attractions; fun. We had a great dinner The Surey Seafood Co. Facilities were OK, but could use a few more hooks in the shower. Good place to do laundryl $1.00 a load.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We walked our dogs down by the water in the mornings. We were able to tour the plantation one afternoon and learn the history of the area. We also took the ferry across the water and visited Colonial Williamsburg. We were also lucky enough to see two bald eagles flying over the farm area. The campsites are not all even, but most were. They have premium sites as well. The price was also great. We will definitely stay here again.

Another VA state park with an incredibly helpful host who gave us great information (we are new to RVing). Clean, quiet facilities. The reserved sites are more modern, and quite popular. We didn't have a reservation so were in the other part of the campground, wooded and less occupied.

There is the farm and plantation within walking distance from the campground, Historic (from 1617), and interesting exhibits. Great wildlife and birding.

It is a bit off the beaten path. Perfect for a more relaxed experience. We took the ferry from Jamestown--fun!

Chippokes is quite, well maintained, with good sized site specific sites. Site specific sites have blacktop pads. If you go without a reservation, the non site specific sites are gravel, heavily wooded, and many are not level. Very close to the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry that drops you at the Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg. We’ve stayed in Chippokes twice this year and will likely go back again.

We did not actually spend much time in the park. We basically just slept there as we were exploring the area but we did take a drive around.
The camp host was very friendly and helpful. We were a little confused with having to choose our own site and we needed some help figuring out which loop we needed to be in.
Water pressure was good and electric was goodIsh.

This Virginia State park had so many things to do:

1) Ranger led programs every day.
2) A beach to swim at (James River)
3) Shark teeth hunting on the beach.
4) Kayaking/Canoeing on the James river.
5) An old plantation that had several tours a day.
6) A farm machinery museum.
7) A swimming pool
8) A small farm and garden you could tour.

It's located very close to Bacon's Castle (oldest brick house in the US still standing) and the free ferry to Jamestown Virginia.

Great showers and laundry facilities, although some of the sites were not very level.
