Cascade Campground

We are the resupply crew for our son who is biking the Colorado Trail, so we didn't make reservations ahead of time because we didn't know where he would be. We were looking for a place to stay and we're just about to leave Cascade when the camp host came out to our truck and told us he could find a spot for us. He stopped traffic in the road so we could turn around. He warned us that bears had been seen in our site the previous night. The camp was east to get to, sites were very clean and well maintained, the vault toilets were clean, stocked with TP and trash cans were empty. The camp host, Bob, told us about sights to see up the mountain. He is a gem!

Like being in a mini Yosemite Valley or tiny Telluride, this campground is surrounded by tall mountain cliffs of Mt Antero and Mt Princeton, big trees, and so quiet at night! Reservation system clogs up many of the sites, and it’s popularity filled sites early on every day. We got a reservation for a Wednesday night in site 13 to get our “foot in the door” at campground, then found sites available for following night. We lucked out with an amazing “fcfs” site 7 and swapped it out for our reservation site. Several reserved sites remained unused because they can’t fill them if reserved and the person reserving didn’t cancel. Too bad. Fun drive up the road (switches to dirt road just after campground) to St Elmo Ghost Town was a fun excursion. Fed the chipmunks (it’s a thing there). Also great easy hike to Agnes Vaille Waterfall (parking lot near Chalk Creek campground). Easy access to Princeton Hot Springs…also an access side road that will take you on shortcut over pass and straight in to Buena Vista, CO for some fun shopping and restaurants.

Excellent campground close to Mount Princeton Hot Springs and St Elmo. The camp host, Bob was very kind and accommodating. A few things to keep in mind before booking: we have a 35’ 5th Wheel and the host said there are only 3 sites we could fit in. We stayed in site 5 and it was very easy to back in (picnic table and fire pit were on the non door side of the camper). Site 10 is a pull through that would accolade a larger camper was well (site 10 is also not close to the main road). I would also note that the sites closest to the main road are very close to the road and I think road noise would be a bit annoying. There is a hand pump spigot at the campground, but the water was a little brown. We have T-Mobile and had absolutely no service in the valley. Also, there is a HUGE dip for runoff on the main road. This would be tough in a low sitting rig.

Drove through the campground to check it out for future trips. Sites well maintained with a picnic table. Two dumpsters and two bathrooms on site.

Most sites are suited for tents or small trailers. I only noted one that would accommodate our 30ft trailer and truck. I noted one pull through site.

Camp host has large 5th wheel so navigation should not be an issue.

Poor Verizon service.

The campground is great. Clean restrooms, pretty good privacy, and nice shade. Site 18 where we stayed is very exposed to the road and noisy. The perimeter fence between the campground and the road is down, making you feel a bit vulnerable. Other sites were much better and more private. Host was inobtrusive, and was gone for part of our stay. Trails are close to the campground, and Mt. Princeton Hot Springs was 10 minutes away. Views from the campground are great, although solar access is limited by the steep slopes. There is one big dip on the access road to be cautious about.
