Stayed here prior to going to Capitol Reef. Easy to find and get into with my car. There were a number of campers already established. We picked kind of a central site in the middle. Beautiful sunset and sunrise. Dark skies over night. Only issue we had was hornets. We had already set up and were trying to relax and make dinner and there were a number of hornets. Not sure if we parked over a ground nest. Wasn’t swarming by the thousands but maybe 2-3 that were very determined. There are port a potties but we used our portable. Got water from capitol reef when passing through.

“A Convenient, Beautiful Spot With Plenty Of Privacy In Certain Spots”

I stayed two nights in May 2021. It was perfect for me and my dogs. During the day I spent time in the park but left my table and chairs in my spot to hold it. No one bothered it. I’m hoping to return in September.

I travelled here with a 35’ 5th wheel, long bed pickup. While there was a bit of a drop off as you exited the highway, it really wasn’t bad in my opinion. I had no problems with my setup. It was difficult for me to navigate around half buried rocks and washed out spots at the entrance area. I arrived around 3:30 so there were several spots available. Only a few would fit my rig so I ended up along the bluff by the road. It was pretty level requiring only one board to get level. This spot was totally open to the sun which was good for my solar. A few spots had some trees. There was a vault toilet in the area when I arrived, but it was taken away at some point during my stay. It may be a seasonal thing. Connectivity – 2-3 bars LTE with Verizon, I could stream with a little buffering. Once I put up my WeBoost the buffering went away. There is wifi at the Visitor’s Center. Even though it is right along the road it was pretty quiet. I did check out the Beas Lewis area down the road. The entrance was easier and the roads were in better shape. Just past the cow grate and up to the left were some big level spots with glorious views. I had a cell connection there of 2 bars LTE with Verizon. Even though it is further to the park from there, if you can grab one of those spots it would be worth it. I would still stay at the CR Overflow Dispersed area again as the price is right and it is very convenient to the park. I was able to fill my propane tanks at Wonderland RV Park in Torrey. In addition to hiking in Capitol Reef, I did the driving loop through Cathedral Valley. The entrance requires a river crossing so high clearance vehicles are a must. The one thing to know is that you actually drive into the river and turn right. The exit from the river is a little bit up on the left. There are some areas of deep sand so be prepared for that as well.

We had to dodge large, partially buried boulders & deep ruts entering the area. It is just off of SR 24, so some road noise can be expected. There was one port-a-potty on the east end of the camp area. It seemed fairly level parking once you got past the entrance. The views were nice, but we think Beas Lewis BLM is a much better choice.

The 2nd nite we were there a large group parked near us with tents and vans, they had lots of lights and talked throughout the night. Wasn’t as pleasant as our first night when we had no lights and it was super quiet. Stars were incredible. There are several fire pits but no one made a fire, I think we were in a fire ban, not sure-no signs. Will definitely stay again.

This is free camping on Forest Service Land just outside the Park. Some level spots but many require risers: like ya challenge for large rigs (there’s a more level choice towards Torrey). Some folks are abusing the privilege to use our National Trust lands to prove they can drive where they should not: try using one of the very many nooks and places that are already established (there are A LOT!). The FS has also added several porta-potties at this site clearly because of the use (and abuse) of the area. Please use them.
The access from the paved road has large rocks and deep divots: proceed with caution. Once past the entrance the going is easier. I wouldn’t bring a low clearance vehicle through the entryway.
