Like most if not all Michigan State Forest Campgrounds, the fee is $20 per night. Vault toilets and hand pumped water. The vault toilets were clean. The water from the hand pumped well near the entrance was golden colored. The other hand pumped well further back in the campground was much clearer, but we still used it only for bathing and washing dishes, not drinking. DNR passport required. Can be purchased at time of arrival for additional fee. One of several campgrounds with access to the Au Sable River. Enjoyed listening to the birds, especially in the evening. We had nighthawks flying overhead and calling each night. We also had whippoorwills that were extremely close to our campsite although I never saw them, just heard them.
The Mason Tract Pathway is a beautiful woodland hike of about 8 miles linear following the south branch of the Au Sable River. The trail passes through the campground near its northern terminus. It’s an absolutely beautiful hike.
There are a variety of outfitters in the area who can set you up for paddles on the river or provide shuttle services if you have your own boats. We used Paddle Brave Outfitters, which also has a campground associated with it.
