Scott and Jaime are originally from Oregon, but left to pursue corporate careers in Los Angeles, California. After 17 years, they ditched the rat race and sold their house to become full-time RVers. Since 2016, they’ve been traveling in their 2007 Winnebago Journey with their dog Crosby.
We love to boondock and Campendium is our go to site for finding great spots. Here’s some of the gear we use and recommend when we boondock.
Garmin InReach Explorer+
Getting away from it all is great but we often visit remote places that might not have cell phone coverage and this two-way satellite communicator and GPS gives us some peace of mind that we can get help if we need it.
Reliance Products Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Rigid Water Container
We usually carry all our drinking water in two of these jugs when we boondock or RV in Mexico. They are easy to refill and have a built in spigot.
Oxygenics Hand Held Sprayer
We think the Oxygenics shower head is a must have for every RV. Upgrade your stock shower head and get better pressure and while saving water.
Thermacell Backpacker Mosquito Repeller
We like spending time outside but hate mosquitoes and other flying insects. We have a couple of Thermacells and they work great by hiding your scent from the bugs. Friends tell us that they are even effective against the hordes of mosquitoes in Alaska. The backpacker version (top one in photo) is our favorite because you can get 90 hrs out of the cheap stove canisters (less $6 at places like Walmart).
Sun Shower 4 Portable Shower
Our solar shower is a great option in the desert especially if you don’t have neighbors. Let it sit out in the sun and take a late afternoon rinse off.
Big Buddy Grey Indoor-Safe Portable RV Propane Heater
Who’s your buddy? When it gets cold outside our Mr. Heater Big Buddy propane heater heats up our rig quickly without sucking down our batteries and propane tanks like our RV furnace. Bonus – it’s like having a cozy little fireplace in the living room. If you use the small one pound propane tanks the cost can add up. This handy adapter lets you refill for a fraction of the cost. Just invert the large tank and use forceps on the pressure relief valve for best results.
Pour-Over Brewer with Stainless Thermal Carafe
We loved our french press coffee maker but it required a lot of water to clean up and coffee grounds would always go down the drain. We found the Melitta pour over 10 cup coffee maker with stainless steel carafe makes great coffee and is easy to clean up with regular cone filters. The carafe keeps the coffee hot so no need to use the microwave to reheat.
LIADO Outdoors LED Camping Lantern
This collapsible LED lantern replaced an older Coleman gas mobile. Great light and uses very little juice from the batteries. A great deal.
Collapsible Dish Tub
Great for washing dishes and catching water that would go down the sink and take fill up the gray tank. Collapses down to a couple inches tall for easy storage.
Portable Parachute Fabric Travel Camping Hammock
When not in use this lightweight hammocks rolls up in small pouch and weighs a few ounces. It’s easy to set up for comfy place to hang out and enjoy the outdoors.
Elevated Folding Pet Bed
We are still working on our dog Crosby to enjoy his dog cot but it keeps him out of the dirt (a little) and stay a little cleaner! Folds up pretty small and comes with a carrying case.
