By Campendium

One hundred sixty eight campgrounds received 5 star reviews in March. Check out the highlights below:

pine-city
Pine City Campground – Mammoth Lakes, CA

If you want to experience Mammoth Lakes and stay on Lake Mary this is the place. The spots are all primitive and have a lot of trees so getting electricity is a bit of a dance but worth it for the spot. – Living is the Adventure

st-joseph-peninsula-state-park
St. Joseph Peninsula State Park – Port St. Joe, FL

We were able to snag a couple of cancelled nights at St. Joseph State Park and enjoyed this quiet and practically empty beach in Florida…in April! – WanderWasi

hayspur-fish-hatchery
Hayspur Fish Hatchery – Bellevue, ID

We loved this place! This historic hatchery produces rainbow trout, which you can fish on site at their pond or on their creek. – Ardent Camper

east-fork-colorado
East Fork San Juan River – Pagosa Springs, CO

It was huge open area right along the river. The space between the trees getting to the spot from the FS road was a little tight and bumpy, but we made it. We had plenty of room, and there would be room for other RVs as well. – NealysOnWheels

el-capitan-state-beach
El Capitan State Beach – Goleta, CA

We thoroughly enjoyed a quick, spur of the moment weekend escape from LA. Space 107 is the money spot, right on the cliff with a fantastic ocean view. – Peabrain

badger-creek-campground
Badger Creek Campground – Marble Canyon, AZ

There are several places to pull off and camp along the road, but I recommend going all the way to the end. The views are breathtaking, the cliff edge and Colorado river on one side and the Vermillion Cliffs behind. – Wayfaringyogi

fort-valley
Fort Valley – Flagstaff, AZ

This place was great for our first extended boondocking trip! The location is beautiful, especially if you like tall pine trees. They’re everywhere. – CavesofWander

davis-lake-campground-tombigbee-nf
Davis Lake Campground – New Houlka, MS

We originally only planned on staying one night, but the peaceful serenity set on a beautiful lake called to us and we stayed an extra night. – Scottied

south-sulphur
South Sulphur Campground – Sulphur Springs, TX

We stopped here between Hot Springs NP in AR and Ft. Worth and were pleasantly surprised. Deer wandered through the site, we took tons of pics of the huge oak trees in our site and were treated to a magnificent sunset on a glassy lake. – Adventures of Dave and Ann

fort-clinch-state-park
Fort Clinch State Park – Fernandina Beach, FL

This was our second time here and it was just as wonderful as the first. The facilities are immaculate and the beach is quite beautiful. – Margaret

sheep-bridge-road
Sheep Bridge Road – La Verkin, UT

This is an excellent place to stay if you want to be close to Zion without staying inside the crowded park. As a bonus it’s not only free and gorgeous, but right next to a really fun network of mountain biking trails. – WatsonsWander

woahink-lake-rv-resort
Woahink Lake RV Resort – Florence, OR

When we arrived we found a really nice RV park. Their sites are spacious and the shrubs between the sites provide great privacy. It’s a family run business and that shows with the love and care they put into the park. – His and Hers Alaska

blue-bell-campground
Blue Bell Campground – Custer, SD

Custer State Park has national park level beauty. The park is chocked full of wild animals that you can get pretty close to. You are also near Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments. Our time here was wonderful. We would definitely go back. – Greg – Sock Monkey Trekker

savannas-recreational-park
Savannas Recreation Area – Fort Pierce, FL

We give this campground 5 stars because the pluses are huge – in our book totally outweighing the minuses. The first plus was our site – right on the bank of a marshy waterway, with a view that didn’t stop. – Anne H

cabo-pulmo-beach
Cabo Pulmo Beach – Cabo Pulmo, BCS, Mexico

Easy access to the town of Cabo Pulmo (1/4 mile walk) and easy beach access to play in the waves or go snorkeling/scuba diving. Can’t complain about camping for free in a National Preserve. – Van-Tramp

loy-butte-road
Loy Butte Road – Sedona, AZ

This is one of our new favorite spots. The views were simply amazing. We had a 360 degree view of the nearby cliffs and mountains. We saw a handful of hot air balloons in the distance a few of the mornings. – 188sqft

mckinney-falls-state-park
McKinney Falls State Park – Austin, TX

Blue bonnets are in bloom right now and they are almost everywhere and are so beautiful! Over all, I loved this campground. I will definitely come back in the future. – Joe Hendricks

fossil-falls-dry-lake-bed
Fossil Falls Dry Lake Bed – Little Lake, CA

The views of the eastern Sierras is beautiful and there are several hikes, for example to the Fossil Falls or the Little Lake overlook. This is one of my favorite boondocking spots so far. – remember to explore

hovenweep-national-monument
Hovenweep National Monument – Montezuma Creek, CO

Love this small campground! Great sites, each unique and with its own “Fred and Wilma Flintstone” ramada. Perfect starting point for the Holly Ruin trail, right out of the campground. – Chris&David

valley-of-the-gods
Valley of the Gods – Mexican Hat, UT

This is one of the greatest spots you will ever camp at. The views are stunning, it is peaceful and quiet. – Kingham
