If I wanted to plan a trip for May how early do you think I need to book to get one of the sites that has a nice view?

Bathrooms are very old, hence 4 stars instead of 5. Some nice trails through the woods and very convenient to Weaverville, Asheville and BRP.
Narrow road up but it’s short and completely doable. there is a reason for no check-in prior to 2pm since it is certainly a one vehicle roadway.

What we loved most about this campground: the thoughtful common seating area for mountain and sunset viewing for those not parked in the premium sites, the fact that all the sites were generously spaced and angled with plenty of room for outdoor enjoyment at every site, and the extremely easy access to Asheville. We thought the price of $55/night with full hook up was an excellent value for these features, especially since Asheville is a very expensive area. The bathhouse was only average but during our stay it was clean and functional, including the laundry machines, and we like the setup of individual rooms with showers and toilets instead of rows of stalls in one big room. Also there were plenty of unisex shower/toilet rooms so we never had a wait even though the park was full when we visited.
The driveway up the mountain to the campground is definitely challenging, since it is steep, winding, and narrow. But it's less than half a mile long and it was no worse than roads we've encountered in other mountainous areas. The main road by the sites and the turnaround area are also a bit tight, but there were plenty of large toy haulers and Class As in the park when we visited. We had no trouble with parking or exiting in our 25 foot trailer.
The owners have made trails down the mountain from the campground, but for really good views we recommend hiking along the Blue Ridge or elsewhere. The trails on site were good to stretch the legs or walk dogs, so a nice feature but not the main attraction.
Cell service on AT&T was strong and there were quite a few OATV channels (we didn't bother hooking up to the park's cable).

There are no bear boxes provided and the property manager, Jason, will assure you it’s your fault if they come into your campsite and you left something out that is square in shape. Anything square apparently, so store everything in your car.
He also does NOT want this information shared. He accused my family of chasing away business when we were honest about having seen bears but in fact had encouraged the fellow camper’s they were safe.
Tent Campsites leave a lot to be desired.
Campground is well maintained and view from BATHHOUSE is beautiful, but not from tent sites.
Bathrooms leave a lot to be desired. Old, Stained and Mildewed, low lighting and poor ventilation.
Note: We left out a cube shaped plastic water jug and lost our tent as a result. We didn’t even complain to management or say a word, but still were treated horribly because when asked, we were honest and told a fellow camper the truth about bears destroying our campsite because of the cube shaped waterjug. We assured them it was our fault.
Still the property manager accused us of driving away business. Very Rude. Never listened to us. We packed up and left a day early as that is not the kind of place we wanted to be, or people we wanted to be around.

The road up is narrow and some sites are harder to navigate.
There are the “P prime” sites that have spectacular views so if you get one of those it’s worth it. If they tell you about a deluxe site just plan on looking at trees and having to walk down to the view which isn’t the end of the world.

The views are outstanding from P! through P8. I was in a deluxe site D9, which was the only site of the deluxe sites with a view. The shower, bathroom house was old and dated. I would say it was at best some what clean. The noise level was low. the camp ground was well taken care of. Jason and other maintenance personnel were outstanding if you needed help. Marissa at check in was vert nice as well. There is an outstanding you tube video for this camp ground. Google it.
The only problem I see with this camp ground is the turn around. You must drive your camper to the end and turn around in a circle to leave the camp ground. This is not a problem for most experienced campers. I would say most people are concerned with the stress it puts on the camper as well as the driver. I only have a 27 foot trailer and it was tight. They need to make this turn around larger and get the trash cans and poles out the way. Maybe remove the last camp site so you have more room to turn around. If we never come back it would only be due to the turn around.

Amazing views. We lucked out and got site P1 on the edge of the mountain looking out after a cancellation for one night. They have a nice sitting area if you don’t get one of those sites. The WiFi was good enough to stream TV. The Yurtz look like they would be very fun and are more private. It’s very close to Asheville but the entrance is a challenge since it is graded dirt/gravel only one vehicle wide with lots of turns. Coming down with a large class A was more challenging and I had to shift to low and brake the entire time. Pay attention to the gravel speed bumps once you are just entering or leaving. Since you can’t hit them perfectly straight they will really rock your RV unless you go really slowly. We plan to return and spend more time there.

Great views, quiet setting, convenient to Asheville’s downtown, nearby kayaking and hiking, fantastic staff, clean, great layout, what more can I say?
This is a fantastic campground on all levels and highly recommended! I wish more campgrounds would follow a similar layout that feels so private even without huge space.

P1-8 have similar spectacular views. Jason greeted us at the entrance and was so kind and helpful. I know some reviews have said the drive up is difficult but we navigated it fine in our 44ft fifth wheel so do not let that deter you. My husband and I are definitely planning to return for a longer stay.
