Camp High Sierra is located in a beautiful, forested neighborhood in Mammoth Lakes. It seems to attract mostly inexperienced campers, both in RVs and tents. Expect people to regularly wander through your campsite, run generators, leave trash laying about, leave food out for bears to find, and otherwise make lots of noise. One group of campers across from my site thought it would be a wonderful idea to pressure wash their travel trailer. Yes, they brought a gas-powered pressure washer with them. Since Camp High Sierra is a Mammoth Mountain Corporation property, the staff that works there, although very friendly, have little ability or authority to correct bad behavior, enforce camp rules, or even ask loud campers to quiet down. Any complaints must be directed to Mammoth corporate offices, where you are unlikely to get any response. Electricity is limited to 15 amps, so bring an extension cord sized appropriately. There are shared water spigots. Sewer dump is on site, but there are no individual sewer connections available.

This campground is managed by Los Angeles County Parks, along with Mammoth Mountain. Although it offers RV spots, electricity is limited to 15 amp service, so running air conditioning units must be done using generators. Water is from spigots that are sometimes far enough away from the RV spaces that it may require connecting two or more hoses. Spigots are shared, leading to fluctuations in water pressure. There is a pump out station, but otherwise no black/grey water hookups. At many managed or hosted RV parks, quiet time and other park rules are enforced. Not here. Loud, boisterous, drunk adults were up until well after 10 pm, as were RVers playing outdoor movies on big screens until late at night. Screaming kids, barking dogs and generators abound. One RVer arrived at camp with an industrial, open-frame generator that sounded like a jackhammer all day long. I had to move my trailer to the other side of the park. The nice employee at the reception desk called management about it, as it was disturbing (terrorizing) the entire campground. I was informed that they could not ask him to stop his generator because their camp rules did not specify size limits for generators. Seems like mostly people from cities come here, as every RV had all available outside lighting on throughout each night. For those seeking a real mountain experience and enjoying nature and quietude, boondocking might be a better option.

We honestly couldn’t be happier. Site was very spacious, and mostly dry. The staff obviously worked incredibly hard to get this campground ready, despite all the odds against them.
Front desk lady was extremely nice and helpful, and I commend her for keeping her cool and making everything work in such a high stress situation with all the snow melt and such a late opening for them.
Free hot showers, in a heated bathroom no less, and free dump station for guests.
Our 4 year old had a blast, with plenty of room to play and ride his bike.
The electric sites offer 15amps, which was honestly plenty. You can power pretty much anything except an AC, which you really don’t need anyways.
Already re-booked for next summer. Can’t wait to get back to Camp High Sierra!

Site 39 is "tent only" meaning that access by RV is not allowed. We parked a Mercedes Sprinter and large Tacoma truck on the site with ease. Plenty of space for both vehicles as our "tents". A picnic table, bear box and fire ring is provided. The site was relatively flat.
Even in the height of fire season this campground permitted fires, which always makes camping more enjoyable. Firewood is for sale.
There is an office staffed with friendly folks selling little odds and ends. Attached is a very large game room for the kids.
I found the campground to be extremely quiet. Great views of the surrounding mountains. Despite being nestled right up next to the edge of housing developments this place felt removed.

Nice family destination camp. Large sites not too close to your neighbors. Friendly staff, clean restrooms with showers. Close to town with lots of outdoor activities.
Not great for big or tall rigs. The only bears we saw were carved out of wood.
