Wow, what a cool place. Lots and lots of empty space. Bet there was 500 people camped in 5-6 square miles just before the end of the year 2020. But you’d never know it. So much space. Made the 18 mile trip to Johannesburg and got some lunch one day, great burger joint in a living ghost town.
Our site had some broken glass but no nails, didn’t have any issues you don’t run into at any other average campsite. Nice large rock ring for the fire.
California City requires an OHV pass, $15 per year. Be sure to get that to avoid any fines. Plus it helps support the free water, trash, and dump station.
We will totally be back here again to camp and explore.

Lots of wide open space for boondocking and off road riding. It was very quiet during our stay, even on the weekends. We stayed in late February. Unfortunately, I cannot give this location more than 3 stars because our site (and several others we looked at) had nails and glass all over the ground. And I don’t mean one or two... we picked up hundreds of nails. A flat tire would ruin anyone’s good time. We’re VERY thankful that we didn’t get one. However, we did spend lots of time and effort picking them up. Borax Bills has a dump and fresh water for $5, so that’s convenient. Even if they were a bit rude. All in all though, we enjoyed our stay. Very peaceful.

OHV area, very quiet during the week, water $5, dump $5, Free trash, showers (tokens) Bathrooms- flush toilets free.
Nice desert area- lots to drive to even without a OHV. You can stay closer to town for better cell coverage. Wifi booster worked great- we camped further out in the desert

This is boondock camping. It's pretty far off the beaten path, yet about a 10 minute drive to California City where there are some basic conveniences (grocery store, auto parts, gas station, etc.) No hookups, it is free, and you just park wherever you like. It's pretty far off the beaten path, yet about a 10 minute drive to California City where there are some basic conveniences (grocery store, auto parts, gas station, etc.) No hookups, it is free, and you just park wherever you like. It's used as an off-road area so there are always motorcycles, quads, UTV, etc. driving around. It is beautiful desert terrain, mostly flat and hard packed. There is an abundance of unpaved flat dirt roads. The real beauty is at night when all the stars come out. You are far from all the lights of LA and can see all the stars!

Camp is pretty big, huge amount of dirt bikers passing through daily. The noise woke my family and I early in the morning. Lots of dust! Small rattle snake den on campsite. If you are going to camp in California city, camp more near the mountain ranges.
