Located in the Nantahala National Forest in a remote part of Western North Carolina near Fontana Dam and the Appalachian Trail. Entrance is located off Cable Cove Road, a dirt road, which runs off of Fontana Rd (Hwy 28) with nearby boating access to Fontana Lake. Because of this boat access, there can be heavier traffic near the campground entrance.

The campground itself is in an area of mature hardwoods and most sites offer partial to heavy shade. There are about 25 first-come, first-serve sites that cost $10/night. There is a 14-day stay limit. A fee collection box is located at the campground entrance and is emptied daily by a ranger. The sites are fairly spacious but a few are on a small incline and have a few steps to access which make those better suited for tents. We tent-camped but we towed a trailer with supplies. There were also several various sized travel trailers and larger motorized RVs using the campground. Most sites are graveled and have a fire ring, grill, and picnic table. There are water spigots, bear trash cans, and small restrooms with foot flush toilets and sinks, but no showers. There was a single campground host on site who mopped the restrooms each day and kept the toilet paper filled. The trash was also emptied several times while we were there but not daily.

We also had no cell signal in the campground or in the nearby area with either Verizon or Sprint. Coolers are required to be stored inside vehicles when not in use or a bear container must be used to store food.

Campsite #16 gets a thumbs up from us! It had plenty of room for our tent and adequate privacy. We hung by the fire and enjoyed campfire cooking after a day of hiking and driving on the Cherohala. Our only negative comment is: No showers! Only a toilet, no sink. Drinking water is available at intervals at outdoor faucets.
