“Quiet Pleasant Stay”

We camped for 2 nights in the electric sites east of main area with showers and other facilities. There were very few campers early in the week in late Sept. Water levels in lake very low. Camp well kept-outhouses very clean. Enjoyed the thick canopy of cottonwood trees providing shade and habitat for many birds.
Barb would stay here again

We wanted to hit the Scottsbluff area to do some exploring and thought this would be a good place to stay (quiet and scenic) It sounded like a good idea...at first.
We arrived on a Monday afternoon and stopped by the office/visitor center. The woman was friendly enough. She explained that for out-of-staters there is an additional $8 per night charge for access into the state park. She also explained that there is a new area out at the Butte View campground...."sites are bigger and grassier and much more private and quiet".
So we headed over to find a site. We grabbed a handicapped site as the picnic table and fire pit were on cement rather than having our picnic table on a separate plane from the RV. The site was long enough...no problem there. And that's where it stopped.
We were here early in May, so maybe they hadn't started their clean up yet...or not. The grass had been uncut, the sites (not just ours) had piles (literally) of sand on the cement, in the fire pit and under the picnic table. Now, we get that cottonwoods are messy trees... but the sand piles where I could build castles was a bit much.
They were still filling the lake up and the water was low. With that said, there was a lot of broken glass and garbage by the water near our site. We actually brought ours dogs over to the other side to the day use area to swim as it was much better.
The cell signal was fairly good on this side...non-existent by the office side. We opted for 2 nights so we had time to scout the area for other options (just in case).
The first night was nice and quiet even though there was constantly vehicles speeding up and down the road our site was on. The second day/night was worse. Lots of people came in and parked in sites and used it as day use. A group dry camping about 5 sites down from us were blaring music until all hours of the wee morn, vehicles speeding by at all hours, yelling.... Never once did we see a park ranger or anyone coming around to just "check on things".
To wrap up...the newer section was $30 a night for electric only. We had bought a Nebraska State Park pass ($45) as it would actually save us money (as we were originally planning on staying for 10 days) rather than pay that nightly $8 fee. Yeah...big mistake.
As a whole, this place was insanely expensive for a place with electric only, no upkeep, no rangers and fair signal. We are hoping the rest of Nebraska state parks are not the same. This will definitely not be on our list of places to return.

Campsite with electric (50 amp, 30 amp and 110amp all in the power stand at each site) was $20, but we had to also pay a park entry fee of $8 for our out of state vehicle ($6 for residents).
All had level, long, paved sites, long enough for big rigs and enough room for slide outs. There was ample space between sites with lots of shade from Cottonwood trees and most offered some privacy. Sites in the loop were closer to the boat launch, newer bathroom and shower building and large grassy area. Other sites continue down the campground road bordering the lake getting closer to the water the further down you go. Behind these sites is an open area which is the flood plain for the lake, you can see water marks on the trees. One newer pit toilet and an older pit toilet were in this area. At the very end appeared to be the non electric sites for $8. We also saw some tents set up down near the water and evidence of people driving on the beach near the lake.
Due to the messy Cottonwood trees, it is difficult to keep the sites clean, and there was also a lot of trash in our area from previous campers and down in the flood plain area. The green grass/weeds were mowed except under and around the table and fire pit.
