We just spent a day and a half at Buckhorn. We've camped at Chilao before but Buckhorn gives you a real "in the forest" experience. Pit toilets, water taps around the camp. Campground is very popular during the relatively short season. We're tent campers so we were not deterred by the access issues noted by the other reviewer, but a bringing a trailer or large RV down the access road would be very difficult. The central part of the campground is quite crowded but there are some more secluded spots if you circle down to the end of the loops. Not all pads are paved and some are dirt. Newcomb Ranch is a few miles away for a hot meal. Several trails and very comfortable even when hot elsewhere with good airflow down the canyons and lots of shade from mature Redwoods and other firs.

This is a beautiful campground with under 30 sites, all of which are tent only or campervan/truck camper — I would not tow anything down the road, and be very cautious even with taller campervan like Sprinters because of very low limbs on the entrance road. There are no amenities (gas, ATM, grocery) anywhere in the area, so make sure you stock up before heading up the mountain. The sites are paved, but most are very short and at odd angles, so carefullly scout out the available spots and make sure you fit. There are picnic tables and firerings (they dont sell wood, so bring your own). There’s also a few great hiking trails right from the campground, or a short drive up the road. Overall, its a really pretty place to spend a few days— the tall trees provide nice shade and the elevation makes for cooler temps!
