Pioneer Campground

We came to this campground from the east. We had been on the rimrocker all day. I don’t recommend any trailers coming from the east unless they are off-road trailers. We had the place to ourselves. The facilities were spotless and it was a beautiful stay. The lake is extremely low so don’t expect much fishing. There were tons of animals in the area. We exited to the west and turned off at 2 mile road. I think any <25’ trailers would have any problems.

Beautiful. Most sites had some shade during the day. All sites had a fire ring and picnic table, plus some sort of small metal table stand. Several vault toilets were located here and there. Site #1 was designated for a camp host, but was not occupied. Many sites were pull through along the outside edges of the campground. There were a lot of trailers and all people told me that it required a 4x4 to get them in. The road in from Paradox was partially paved and then dirt and gravel, much of it single lane. I asked others about the other roads to get here. Most everyone said the road from Paradox was best for low clearance vehicles. One person said he pulled his trailer in via Two Mile without issues, but I didn't try that road. He said you can get to Moab faster that way. Of the 30 or so campsites, mostly full on the weekend, all were occupied by 4x4 vehicles except me and one other camper. You have a nice view of the mountain in #2 through #13. #13 and #14 have a nice view of the lake. The lake was very low at the time that I was there May 2018, at least 20 ft below the end of the boat ramp. The interior campsites are more shaded. The winds were very intense at the time, so the campsites deeper in the trees had less wind. In addition to the campground, there were dispersed sites along the road. People also camped in many places in the recreation area around the lake for free that were set up with pads and a fire ring. The whole area seems to cater to the ATV crowd. At least it keeps away the bears.
