Do they permit tent camping?

I do not believe so. There are no facilities so you need to be self contained.

It used to be grass/dirt that during rains would be really muddy. they put down a deep layer of big rock now. So, even if they did, it would be so uncomfortable to sleep in a tent now.

No unfortunately. There's just a wide open field that cars/trailers can line up in much like a parking lot. Every vehicle and tow item must be contained and not have any set ups outside their "closed up" footprint. That being said, it's a great place to quick-camp for an overnight and the people are very friendly to tourists.

We camped there last year and there were about 75 RVs but didn't see a single tent. I'd call and ask just for peace of mind.

Nope. All camping vehicles must be self-contained. This is a busy retail establishment on Highway 101. Overnight campers are parked along the perimeter of their gravel retail parking lot. No outside grills or set ups are permitted.
