Black Mountain Campground

This campground is a gem. It’s small, pretty, clean and close to Mount Mitchell and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There’s a hiking trail near the campground that’ll take you to Mount Mitchell but it’s a loooooong hike. There’s a relatively short hike to a waterfall called Setrock Creek Falls.

I wasn’t able to book a site on short notice but about 10 sites were first-come-first-served which was great! We showed up at opening time, which I think was 8 or 9am (call to confirm). The office person gave me a list of open sites that I could choose from. We drove the campground loop and chose the site we wanted. Within a couple hours the rest of the sites were taken.

The bathrooms were so incredibly clean. They actually have the same bathroom/shower buildings as Lake Powhatan Campground. It has single stall bathrooms and showers. I think the shower stalls are heated. And yes, there’s hot water.

Dump station. This campground does not have a dump station however there is one nearby. I forget where but call the campground and ask where it is. We drove to it. It does exist.

Fresh water. The campground has water spigots throughout. We filled our van’s fresh water tank by repeatedly filling up our 5-gallon fresh water container and pouring that into our tank.

Internet. The glory of this place is that it’s out in the woods away from stuff. This translates to no cell signal. With our booster, we could eek out enough signal to get the weather app to refresh on Verizon after waiting several minutes. But that’s it. If you want/need signal, you can get a strong but limited data signal at the golf course east of the campground which we passed on our way there. But if you need some serious signal to work or download Netflix, there’s an amazing spot even further east where 80 and Blue Ridge Parkway intersect. It’s a scenic overlook at the Eastern Continental Divide at Buck Creek Road. I actually needed to work that Friday. We ended up driving to the campground to secure a site. The whole way there I checked the signal. Then we drove back the way we came and ended up spending the whole day at this scenic overlook. The download speed was great but thankfully I didn’t need to video chat because the upload speed was almost nil. T-Mobile via Nighthawk MR-1100 - 13.6 mbps down and 0.6 up with 54 ping.

Our new favorite campground right in our “back yard.” The city address is the same as ours but this place was nearly 45 minutes away from our house.

We had a fantastic experience. This is a small, quiet, clean, full of actual nature campground. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The camp sites are well spaced. The bathrooms were cleaned daily.

There is plenty of hiking and exploring options.

Then at night all we heard was the water rushing down the river, the crackling camp fire and the insects trilling in the background. It was lovely!

Our campsite seemed very large and there was plenty of privacy. We look forward to coming back!

Tons of great hiking & exploring! The beautiful Toe River runs along the campground as well.
The bathrooms are very clean, but the only hot showers are at the office or in the bath house by the river.
We were here in late July, lots of families with kids and large groups camping together.
Listen to any advice telling you to avoid Hwy 80 at all costs. While it’s doable, make it easier on yourself and come in from the BRP. Less stress while towing is always a good thing.

We pulled in on a Sunday morning and got the best site in the park (in my opinion), site #1. Several of the sites are right on the river, and you can hear it all night with the windows open. The sites on the river are first come first served, so it was just lucky that we got the one we did. Camp hosts are wonderful, and so friendly and helpful. The park is kept up extremely well, with a lot of attention to cleanliness. I would suggest driving the parkway as much as you can instead of highway 80, because hwy 80 has so many sharp turns, that it is dangerous if you are in a larger vehicle. It is also much cooler in this campground than many of the other in the area since it is at about 3000ft elevation.

Black mountain Campground. Nice big sites, 4 electric, New bathhouse, good showers, trout stream, waterfall, biking and hiking. WiFi at the camp office. Cell signal 2.6 miles down a gravel road. The road from Marion is not recommended for long trailers or the faint of heart. I’m 20’ and my tv front left was over the yellow to keep the trailer right rear on the road. It’s best to come in off the blue ridge parkway. All paved up to the last 2.6 miles. Small local store 3 miles but 45 minutes to Marion for bigger choices.

Very nice campground. 2 close waterfalls and a lot of hiking trails. Only thing I didn’t like is that they stress bear safety, yet offer no place to clean dishes, and was told to wash them in a bucket and then dump the water away from your campsite?? Isn’t that basically chumming for bears???? They need to add a wash station, I have camped in bear country many times and every time they have a designated spot for campers to wash dishes. Other than that, place is awesome.

This campsite is very well maintained. Friendly camp host. It was pleasant our first night with mostly families and retirees camping. Not so much Saturday night as a huge tent camping group arrived with either young adults or teenagers that were noisy. So I would avoid this if you are only coming for Saturday night camping. Every other night was great and not so crowded. Nice short hike to a waterfall available as well as a river trail where I believe you can tube and definitely fly fish. Short drive to Mt. Mitchell state park for those who don’t want to hike to the summit from the campground. A moderate to strenuous 5.6 mile hike if you are not used to hiking. Also no cell coverage (Verizon)! A plus when you want to escape 😁

Spoke to several campers and I don’t think any carriers were receiving. Long gravel road to entrance, but still easily passable for all vehicle types. Only taking stars away for noise Saturday night.

In the Pisgah National Forest, its Open April - October. The campground is located on South Toe Rd, Burnsville, NC.

Some sites along the river, all have nice trees between...modern showers and toilets . Each site has a parking area tent area fire ring and a picnic table. water is available in designated spots. Hiking & biking trails, fishing, tubing and many other recreational activities available and ice and firewood available. They have weekend programs Mem. Day to Labor Day. Good base for making a summit HIKE to Mt. Mitchell the highest peak in the east, at 6, 684 ft.

The road (hwy 80 Lake Tohoma Rd) going up is steep and winding so long trailers may be hard to get up there...
