“Nice clean campground, big private sites”

Really enjoyed our stay here. Big private site - couldn't see our neighbors on either side - close to lake. There is a mix of reserved and non reserved sites, get here early in the week if you need a site to accommodate a Motor Home or large trailer and don't have reservations. Lots of mosquitos, bring repellant!
Very good cell service with Verizon.

“Off Road Vehicle Campground”

Location - The campground is located off of Highway 20 at the top of Santiam Pass, around 4,700 feet elevation. The campground is along the north shore of Big Lake. The campsites with trees don't have a direct view of the lake. The sites with a direct view of the lake are close together and in an area with fewer trees.

Access - The campground is a couple miles off of highway 20 on a two lane paved road. The road can be narrow in places and people wanted to drive fast and pass us. I think the folks who were in a hurry were going to the youth camp which is on the other side of the lake.

Cleanliness - The campground was clean.

Site Quality - This is a Forest Service campground so the site quality varies. Our site was gravel, mostly level and around 45 feet in length. However, it was very close to a neighbor on one side. Other sites were much smaller. Sites 1- 21 are on side loops that have a view of the lake, but the sites are close together with little privacy. Site numbers above 21 were in the trees with better privacy, but little or no lake view.

Noise - This is not a campground that you stay at for peace and quiet. This is a popular off road vehicle area so there is noise from four wheelers and dirt bikes that enter and leave the campground. Big Lake allows motorized boats, so there can be noise from motor boats. When we were camping here there was an off road rally where a public address system was used that could be heard throughout the campground.
