Big Creek Government Camp

Small campground with about 20 spots, half would have held our 35’ motorhome. We were lucky enough to secure #2 and #3 for our two coaches. Didn’t have to unhook our toads. We did unhook for a sight seeing trip back to Watson Lake.

The setting is gorgeous, 2 & 3 are right above the river. Drinking water is available from a hand pump spigot. The campground filled up about 8pm, with a few others circling to find a spot.

Now the down side .. misquotes, and more misquotes. Located just west of bridge construction. During the day we could hear the equipment working 7am to 6pm, It’s also located at the bottom of a hill and a couple of times we noticed the truckers using their engine brakes. The noise was mostly drowned out by the rushing water next to us. We had a security breech over night and we’re invaded by MISQUOTES! It was a blood bath in the morning.

We never saw an employee come to collect the park fees or check on it .. we believe he/she was kidnapped by the misquotes and we may never see them again 😉

My crew said NO MORae Government camp grounds .. personally I think they all will have misquotes this time of the year .. I’d do it again 😄

We were headed south, but still meeting northbound traffic on August 5th. Arrived here about 3 p.m. and at first blush figured there were only two empty sites available. Later, as we walked around, we realized that at least five of the tagged sites were actually expired tags from the past couple days so we pulled them. By 8 p.m. every site was full.

This is a typical Yukon Government Campground. Gravel road, gravel sites that will require some leveling. Pricing is still $12 including free firewood if you're a bonfire person and you've brought your splitting maul. For some reason, the sign out front was missing but the posts were there.

No connectivity on Google Fi or Verizon

We have stayed at this campground several times on our travels along the Alaska Highway. Always during the shoulder season so its been relatively quite during our stays with plenty of spaces to choose from. This is one of the few YGCGs that are along the highway that they do not gate during the off season, although during the spring the snow may limit your access if your making the drive early in the season. The area is wooded, with a few sites that have a creek view. This campground can accommodate RVs of any size with a little imagination. If you don't want to stay hear, there is a open gravel pit area a few miles east of this location that may work for you. Some road noise can be heard, especially from truckers coming down the hill before crossing the bridge but luckily its few and far between.

The only government camp in the area, this one is busy but we still found a good site at 7pm. Open, forest setting with only a few sites adjacent to the creek and set a bit above it. Site 3 is the best, spacious pull through site with unobstructed views of the creek.

We stayed at site 2 which is also creekside but directly across from the highway entrance so more exposed to highway noise. Campground is relatively close to the highway - there is some road noise throughout the campground.

Some of the sites were smaller and closer together. There is a row of tent only sites near the picnic shelter. Water pump, garbage but no recycling.

No cell signal at all on Bell Canada, even with a booster. As you drive east toward Watson Lake, there is some signal.
