Beaver Dam Campground

This National Forest Campground is a nice park with 29 electric/water hookup sites, sites are paved and 12 foot wide and some a good 60 foot long. Camp sites are configured in a one way loop; these sites are back-in pads are all angled the right way so that big rigs should have an easy time backing in. Our site was exactly level on both axis’s and pads have an adjacent pea-gravel area with a picnic table, massive fire ring (the biggest we’ve seen), and lantern pole. Site shade coverage varies, but I’d say the average is 40%. Some sites are on the water’s edge of Upper Caney Lake and you would have access right from the site.

On the loop there are 2 sets of bathrooms. Garbage cans are positioned at every site and trash is picked up daily. Camp Host is stationed at site 3 and is very friendly and helpful.

50amp electric is clean and stable, but I thought just a little on the high side at 127vac.

There’s a central dump station near the entrance to the campground.
All interior roads are paved, amply wide and easily navigable. There are two boat ramps and trails for hiking and biking. The park is home to squirrels, deer, armadillos, various wild birds, poisonous snakes and waters have been known to be home for a couple of alligators which we didn’t see any of.

The weekend we were there was a little busy, weekdays were quiet and peaceful.

Be aware of total per night cost to camp: $25 (50% off for America the Beautiful senior pass) to camp PLUS $5 (50% off for AtB pass) for each vehicle PLUS $5 for water/electric. So, for a motorhome with towed vehicle, the total is $40 (or $22.50 with America the Beautiful senior pass) per night. Plenty of trees and space between sites but there was no Verizon cell service, so we had to cut short our stay. We tried to cancel as soon as we arrived, before we set up, but hosts could not help and we could not contact Recreation.gov until we left the area the next day. Waited on hold for 53 minutes. Recreation.gov denied a refund because our reservation had already started.

Great park to get away from the normal large campgrounds. Sites are large and spread out so you feel like you have the place all to yourself. The town of Minden is 10 minutes away. Go to Roma's! Great Italian food and atmosphere. Cell signal was okay but not great. We stayed near the water but it seems the signal is better at the spots off the lake.

Beautiful campground with nice, long, level sites. Sites are spaced so far apart that they feel very private and often have greenery between you and your next door neighbor. Friendly host and hostess. Very well-maintained. I stayed three days/two nights and definitely will return. I did not use the bathroom facilities but I did see the host cleaning them on a daily basis. I paid $15/night because I had the America the Beautiful pass and it was definitely worthwhile. I’m looking forward to returning in the fall/winter and hiking the trails. They were closed due to logging. Beach/swimming area was closed due to CoVid. Almost forgot to mention that the campground is convenient to I20 and the local Walmart. Maybe a 10-minute Drive after you exit I20 but feels very remote and is so quiet and peaceful.
