I am in a 36' motorhome. Do people go towards the rock quarry or make the right down the south road?

Not sure exactly what you mean. Pulling a 27' Airstream with an Expedition, I actually turned left almost immediately and stopped at the first level spot I came to because it was getting dark. Unfortunately, we found lots of broken glass as well as numerous small cholla (jumping) cactus all around us. We moved further in on our left hand road and found a very nice spot sort of up near a red rock hill. From what I could see and from the number of rigs moving in and out, there are a large number of sites scattered around if you go straight or bear right. The main road goes straight. Just MAKE SURE you are entering the Beas Lewis disbursed camping area, which goes right off a bend in Hwy 24 about 1.2 miles from Main St. in Torrey. It's very pretty but can be windy. Have a good stay!

From what I recall, the further you get from the road, the worse the road.

We stayed right next to the rock quarry on the left a few hundred feet after the entrance. There's a 10 ft climb up to that area but we did it with a 33 ft 5th wheel. There's plenty of room to stop there and get out and look around. Not sure if you'll want to do it with a motorhome. That's an awesome spot up there so I'd take it if it is available. There's room for a few rigs up there but we were by ourselves most of the time we were there. We didn't look down the south road too much but saw people camping down that way.
