“Lucky Find”

I stayed here during a very hot Fourth of July weekend for the Wheeler County Bluegrass Festival. Normally all campgrounds are full, but I found one spot here that was just wonderful. Nice people, large tent sites, enough room for small RVs too. They also have potable water that is easy and convenient to find, good dry restroom as well. There is some road noise off why 19, but when in the tent the nice forested shelter provided some good shade and quiet. Good birdwatching in the campground too. Terrific County Parks staff as well -- helpful, smart, practical. I look forward to staying here again with friends and kids.

“Nice quiet park in the pines”

First, while I'll say this was a nice little park, we passed another beautiful spot right along the river called Muleshoe. I'd definitely recommend checking it out, though we wanted to be a little further down the road before stopping for the night.

Next, I'll put in a warning that, while the back roads along the John Day are breathtakingly beautiful and quaint, many of the towns are so sleepy that hey may or may not have gas and, if they have a pump, it may not be working. So go ahead, pick your own meandering route through these backroads, but make sure to fill up when you get the chance.
