Road to the camping site is all forest service roads. There is washboarding, gravel sections, and there were a few deep ruts. While the road narrows at points, when I did pass others going the other way, there was always a place for me to pull over for them. I was driving a full sized 4x4. I wondered several times if I could pull a small travel trailer up there but decided it would not be a great idea given how tight some of the turns were (one particularly sharp switchback from the direction I came), the low level of some of the branches (my roof did hit a few), the drops along the road causing some side to side articulation, and the working of the breaks on the way back down.

As you pull into the camping area, there is a loop around the “Field.” There is a gate, but it was open. Along the loop, there are 5 or maybe 6 pull off spots. I parked in the first one to the right. It had a fire ring, was clear, and lots of level spots. My cell service provider is AT&T. I barely got 1 bar, and that was if I had my phone on my dash and towards the front of the pull out. In my tent, no cell service. At the opposite end of the field entry point is a trailhead for The Emery Creek Trail. Several hogs came by in the morning, rooting around. In my two days, only one other person camped up there. He told me he was local and comes to the spot a lot to look for rocks and Indian items.

No facilities ... bring what you need.

While staying at the site, several sweeps of clouds passed through ... creating mystical, magical stay. I was ready for some ghosts of Indians past to come by and pay a visit.

I will return to this spot.

So let me start by saying that the gate is closed just before you get to Ball field. Not knowing this we were just confused. we had never been before. we passed overflow camping for Lake Conasauga just before we got to the gate. so we went back and was lucky enough to get the last spot. (FYI this was labor day weekend.) overflow camping is $8 per night. and it does have an outhouse. The next morning we were able to move into the actual lake Conasauga campground and got a site right on the lake $15 per night. Its all first come first serve. The most awesome place, a hidden paradise. No cell service and its over an hour up a mountain. But never fear for there is a free camping area very near. On your way up, there is a sign that says family camping area. Its to the left and the lake campground is hard right. It too is a grassy field for boondocking. And way back down the mountain just a few miles in, there is another Free camping area. Hickey Gap. you will pass this one first, its on the right. There is only 5 sites and they are right on mills creek. I strongly suggest that if one is open, get it! And if not, go straight to the lake, its worth the $15. And then there is always the Free family camping field. I hope this is helpful to someone.
