“Nice Quiet Location ”

Reviewed Apr 13, 2019

This was a very cool site. We have a big rig total length is 66ft truck and 5th wheel and we fit perfectly. Lots of room to maneuver. Even though the trains were going by often they just made a nice rumbling sound and no horns being blasted. It was close the the Aboy crater trail and lots of other rock hounding in the area. The only is... more

There are two parking areas here. The one closest to the hwy (Route 66) is for long term stays. The lot closer to the volcano is day use for those wishing to view or hike to crater. This lot has covered picnic areas, viewing area, and restrooms. The hike to crater is about 4 miles and is easy, although the last few hundred feet is up r... more

“Lonely Boondocking Spot”

Reviewed Dec 30, 2018

Overall Rating

We're staying here on our way from SoCal to Boulder City and must say we really like this spot. The overflow parking is generally level and large enough for at least six rigs. Services are 50 miles away but Amboy and the Crater are both worth a visit. We were here during the government shutdown but the bathrooms at the main parking ... more

Nice clean site/area, not quite as level as others stated but OK. The night I was here 3 vans of college kids also camped nearby a bit of chatter but not bad. The overflow lot is not that large but sufficient for a 1/2 dozen rigs. Cell phone coverage (Verizon) was spotty and at times I had no service. For an overnight spot, quite suffi... more

“Quick hike and a peaceful sleep along Route 66”

Reviewed Feb 20, 2018

Overall Rating

Nice paved and level overflow parking lot that could accommodate the biggest of rigs. We didn’t have to unhook the dingy and we were able to pull in and out with no problems. The hike up the crater is a cool experience but not one you need multiple days to get everything g out of it... this spot is definitely worth a quick stop and if ... more

“Great little parking area right off Rt 66!”

Reviewed Jan 08, 2018

We stayed one night in the paved overflow lot- first lot before the trailhead. Trains in the distance, but earplugs work. Quiet, beautiful desert. Good hike to the Crater, well marked. No tp and overflowing trash, but otherwise a good, free stopover.

“Lonely parking lot in the desert”

Reviewed Mar 05, 2017

Overall Rating

This is a small asphalt area in the Mojave Desert about 20 miles off Interstate 40 and just off of Historic Route 66. It’s easy to park any size rig here given the level parking lot. At the same time, it is dark, quiet, and fairly remote, like boondocking should be. We stayed here in November 2016. This was our very first experien... more

We spent New Year's Eve here, after hiking the crater. We stayed in the overflow parking lot, and didn't see another person. It poured all night, and the access road was covered in mud, but driveable. The toilets were clean, but trash cans were overflowing and there was no toilet paper. It's not a bad place to overnight. Note, trains ... more

I spent two nights here (one on the way to my destination and one on the way back). I parked my van in the far corner of the overflow lot, where overnight camping is allowed, and slept in the van.
