We’ve been here 4 or 5 times now, and each time I grow fonder of this campground. This trip we were in site 23, overlooking a horse pasture with a large grassy lawn and a healthy mature shade tree. Yes… we used the bathhouse and bought ice from the office… but it’s the care that goes into the maintenance of this property that sets it apart. That and the fact that Durango is just so darned marvelous in summer.
We discovered how one can ride south on the County Road behind Alpen Rose and join up with the Animas River Bike Trail at Oxbow Park. We discovered James Ranch 5 miles down the road, a dreamy farm-to-table grill, market and dairy. We found out about Lake Nighthorse, an uncrowded place to kayak and swim. And then there’s the Hot Springs in Trimble; a must-do at night when live music is on the docket.
Durango and Alpen Rose always feels like a vacation- worthy of returning every year.

Which we appreciated. The sites are not huge but there’s plenty of room for outside chairs, etc. We enjoyed the daily train sounds and nightly thunderstorms. It was disappointing that several of the washers and dryers were not working. We would definitely stay here again.

Greeted upon arrival and escorted to site. It was a pull in site right behind the main buildings. Our 24 ft B+ fit snuggly in with plenty of room to move around. Surrounded on all sides by other vans and B+, not roomy, but perfectly acceptable. There was a nice laundry room, unfortunately a lot of machines were down, but things happen. Didn't have to go to town to get the laundry done. Site was shaded, but Starliink mounted on roof worked well for most needs. Nicely surprised.

It’s only about 3 feet high and my big dogs can easily clear it. With it being right next to a highway, we didn’t feel comfortable letting our dogs off leash in it. Someone left a bag of dog poop in our campsite one day while we were out. We cleaned up after our dogs every time. I even cleaned it out of the ditch in the dog park at one point. So we’re not sure why someone would do that. My daughter used the pool and thought it was ok. The pizza is just like gas station pizza. There is no Wifi our cell service.

There is well watered soft grass throughout the grounds. The staff is friendly and organized. And the bathrooms are roomy and very clean. They also have a little Cafe that serves breakfast in the morning and pizza in the evening. Very convenient when you’re not in the mood to cook. But the biggest surprise was how pet friendly they are. They have a massive two acre dog run that is well kept and all grass. (Unlike most other gravel dog runs at other parks) They also have a dog wash station if your pup gets into mischief (like mine did rolling in something smelly near the trout pond😷) We will definitely include Alpen Rose in our future travels.

All sites have full hookups and the folks that work here are nice. Great big dog park! Definitely noisy with the road and the steam train going by. If you need hookups while you explore Durango and the area, this is a good spot to do so. Couldn't get on the wifi, but Verizon was 22 down/10up.
*Edit: A little annoying that a worker came and knocked on my door at 10 reminding me to leave. Check out is 11. He then drove by 2 more times. If they want people out at 10, they should change the check out time.

“Worst Reservation Ever”
noted 7/4/2024
We reserved for one night as we were passing by Durango on our way home. I was texted a few hours prior to our stay and was told that my reservation would be canceled if I did not arrive on time. I mentioned to them that I might arrive a little after closing time, that in the past I had arrived after closing time and had no problems with it as they would leave the instructions by the office. Without any considerations they said that there was no exemptions and that they had to cancel on us even after I told them that we had nowhere else to stay. Very disappointed since we had not been treated like this before at this park. I have a feeling that they wanted to rent my spot to someone else. Disgusted by the terrible service.
noted 10/26/2021
I would’ve given a zero if I could their policy is no refunds for cancellations or changes in your reservation. They stole $69 from me because of dental and mechanical issues we were unable to keep our reservation. The reservation cancellation was made with 25 days notice they should’ve returned my deposit terrible terrible policy very consumer unfriendly. All they have succeeded in doing is creating an un- customer I will never use this park.
