From 260 you take Rim Road for about 6 miles of pavement and then the last 1.5 miles is a well-maintained gravel road that is plenty wide for any rigs passing each other. There is a pit toilet at the trailhead right as you come in. I wish more people would use that instead you find used toilet paper back in the tree area of most campsites.
A large number (probably 80%) of the trees here have painted orange rings on them. I do not know for sure but I am guessing in the near future they will be clear-cutting much of this area. When we were here there was a controlled burn area just down the road so they may be making their way into this area soon.

We tried to camp here in April of 2021. We didn't realize this is still closed for the winter, and will be until May 15th. We saw alot of other campers driving in and turning around. It looked nice and we were disappointed to not be able to stay here. Be advised!

The views are breathtaking if you can get a spot on the rim. There is a sheer drop off and a view that goes forever. A nearly perfect stay, but the neighbors were loud.
We would come back here again in a heartbeat.
Verizon service was great, no disruption to service.

Dispersed camping about 26 miles E of Payson. Going E, make a left at the top of the Mogollon Rim. The visitor center will be on your right. To the left is the Rim Road and Woods Canyon Lake. Go about 5 miles to FR9350 and make a left. The last 2 miles is a dirt road and can be pretty washboard at times but in really good shape. All the campsites are spaced on, I'm guessing, at least 1/4 acre. Lots of room around you!
We absolutely love it up there. 85 degrees when Phoenix is 110! The elevation is around 7,600 feet

Just take it slow for your vehicle and to prevent kicking up dust. The sites on the southside face the rim, while the northside sites are in the pines and mostly shaded. There are shaded southside rim sites and found a few for future visits ,if they are available. The Host drives frequently up and down the road to check on things.

I have camped here many times over the years. Campground fills early on weekends during the summer. There is a Campground Host on site. One vault toilet near campground entrance. Makes an excellent base camp for exploring the trails and lakes on the Mogollon Rim.
