Camp was otherwise clean, and I was able to find a spot in the trees to pitch my tent on a Sunday night. The road from 285 was easily passable with a RAV4, but is washboarded with a couple of small ruts. Quick (15-20 mins) access to the Mt. Sherman trailhead and Fairplay.

The road in is about 5-6 miles of extremely bumpy road be for you reach any campsites We have a 34ft Reflection TT and we couldn’t go much faster than 3-5 mph. It is a very pretty area we saw 4 Moose on the way in but our excitement vanished when we realized after about 1 1/2-2 hours of driving down the bumpy road there were 2 Sites That You Are Still Able To Camp In. There is one spot that would fit 2 decent sized 35-40ft.campers. The other one probably anything less then 30ft would fit but it’s not in a good spot. There was a camper parked in the bigger site and they weren’t looking for any neighbors and said they had more people coming. It Looks Like There Used To be More Spots On The Left Side. Unfortunately The Beavers Have damed The Creek in so many different spots that the Creek now runs across what used to be the entrance. It has since been blocked off by fencing. We ended up turning around and finding another campground somewhere where else. It was a total bummer and waste of a day.

We were getting tired and needed a place to call home for the night, or first pick landed us at just under 13000 ft. We're from Indiana so we didn't acclimate well lol. So we got this little gem around 10k. Much better 8-9k would have been better. We had 2 vehicles pass by late night, and one in the morning around 6am. Other than that it's all nature.

Only one dispersed area remains open on the right side ans 2 on the left as we saw forest employees placing posts to block camping.
No Verizon coverage.

Not many pull offs just the 2 big spots and the 4 wheel drive roads. Was more tent campers then trailers. But worth it, no cell service at all. Only when you get back closer to town. Any rig could probably make it. But a good travel trailer or small 5th wheel is perfect. Then go an explore!

We took our 30' travel trailer out for our first trip and it was great. The spot we ended up at was 5.5 miles from where the paved road ends at the cattle guard. It's a rough road with some good sized rocks, potholes, and very washboard. It was traversable by a whole bunch of cars without issue really. We were towing a 30' travel trailer with an F-150 and were the biggest setup we saw out there. The GPS coordinates are pointing to a good spot but if you keep driving just past Horseshoe Campground turn off on the right you'll see a wide open space with a number of fire rings. The road is Thompson Park Road at 39.203126, -106.085514. It is very open and you could park the largest RV without issue with a great view of Sheep Mountain. There are great tent sites back in the trees too. We showed up at 4 pm on Saturday on Labor Day weekend and there was one other trailer there with room for at least 10 different groups. Later a few people showed up but it was very quiet. Our second night there was no one else around us. Fill your water before you come but there is water at Horseshoe Creek and Fourmile Creek Campgrounds but they are hand pumps.
This was our first try at boondocking and it was incredible. We paid $15 to dump our tanks in Fairplay at Middlefork RV Park and were in and out in 10 minutes even with the flood of traffic. I would highly recommend this spot.

There is lots of spots to chose from. 2 main sites you can pull into, or you can just pull off the road and find a good flat spot. There is lots of places to hike, as well as, lots of space to go off roading, and a beautiful stream that runs off by the road.

We have a 29’ travel trailer and had no trouble with access. The road from Fairplay is very rocky and bumpy but not rough. We saw many small vehicles passing easily.
The road is very busy with people hiking Mt. Sherman and other activities. The campgrounds surrounding this dispersed area are a great option as well.
Our only complaint was how windy it was.
